Free Essays - A Clockwork Orange :: Clockwork Orange Essays
à Clockwork Orange à à à à à by à à Anthony Burgess à This novel is shortââ¬âonly being about 180 pagesââ¬âbut looks may deceive you, or in other words donââ¬â¢t judge a book buy its cover or its thickness. A Clockwork Orange is actually 360 pages because you have to read between the lines. You may think that the storyââ¬â¢s theme is that the future will be filled with horrible decadent violence (that is what I first thought), but if you read between the lines you will understand that this book is written for one main purpose, a purpose other than entertainment. à à à A Clockwork Orange was written in 1962,à story about the future which was meant to be around 1995 to 2000 (a car used in the story called a 95' Durango). A boy about seventeen, Alex the narrator and main character living in London, rampages about with his ââ¬Å"droogsâ⬠(friends) raping, stealing, beating and even killing people. Alex one day is caught for murder and jailed but two years later he is luckily freed twelve years before his sentence ends to take advantage of a new treatment for violent people like him that he volunteered for. He goes through the therapy and succeeds and returns back to civilization. He now becomes sick when he is about to commit a violent or sexual, but also when the Ninth Symphony by Beethoven plays (a minor defect from the treatment). Alex is driven to attempt suicide from this defect because he is locked within a chamber playing this song and does not accomplish his task. He is hospitalized and returns to his ââ¬Å"ultra-violentâ⬠self while the inhumane treatment does not work because it does not even give people a choice about being violent. à While Alex helps to present the theme, two different outcomes are formed. First, Alex goes through a great change from being ââ¬Å"ultra- violentâ⬠to becoming Lamb-chop and then back to being ââ¬Å"ultra-violentâ⬠. Second, the theme defines the major conflict of the story. Although the conflict does not have to do with Alex directly, he helps to illustrate it. The conflict is not solved in the book and will probably never be solved, but it does bring up for debate what Anthony Burgess thinks about right or wrong, regardingà the controversial situation of a cycle of violence. ââ¬Å"Violence makes Violence,â⬠is what was once said to Alex byà P. R. Deltoid, his teacher from school before he went to prison. This book brings up . What do we do to someone who has committed a violent crime? Do we punish them with more violence, for instance death, or do

Principles of Supply Chain Management Essay
Case 3) Donââ¬â¢t shoot the messenger 1. If you were in Jeffââ¬â¢s position, what would you have done to preserve relationships? If I were in Jeffââ¬â¢s position, I would first have thanked my suppliers and expressed gratitude to them for being willing to work closely with the company in not only designing the new product line, but in then reducing supply prices by the asked for 10 percent. I then would have tried to explain the position of the company and how the price decreases were essential to ensuring a successful product launch. Explaining why the additional cost reduction was requested may not make the actual price cuts easier to make, but it should help somewhat when it comes to maintaining the relationships with the suppliers. Hopefully Jeff has treated them honestly up until now and has a level of trust built up with them. 2. Describe the ethical issues involved. It seems to me that the main ethical issue is in the letter that was sent to suppliers on July 5th. The implicit threat that business with suppliers would be cancelled if the cost demands were not met is not consistent with the type of relationship that Jeff had built with his suppliers, based on honestly, integrity, and hard work. In addition, Billing Equipment was asking for previously agreed upon contracts to be re-opened and re-negotiated in order to make the price cuts, essentially going back on their own word. 3. What is your assessment of the general managerââ¬â¢s approach to meeting target cost objectives? My assessment of the general managerââ¬â¢s approach to meeting target cost objectives is that it is not the right way to approach the issue. I donââ¬â¢t like the strong-arm tactics, with the thinly-veiled threat of cancellation if they donââ¬â¢t comply. The General Manager should have involved the suppliers and been more open with them on the need to reduce overall costs for the product line. He could have explained the long-term benefit of partnering with Billings Equipment, evenà if there were a financial sacrifice in the short term. As the case pointed out, in essence, the suppliers that complied and tried to work with the company were punished by being asked to cut prices even more. Case 5) John Deere and Complex Parts, Inc. 1. Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of John Deereââ¬â¢s Achieving Excellence Program. Consider and discuss other criteria to include in the analysis. John Deereââ¬â¢s Achieving Excellence Program is designed to develop long-lasting supplier relationships through an evaluation process that promotes communication, trust, cooperation, and innovation. I think that overall this is a very good program. It encourages suppliers to work with John Deere and collaborate to improve cost, quality, and timeliness of delivery. It includes some objective ratings that can directly measure supplier performance, and could be used to help identify areas of improvement. It helps to form long-lasting relationships with suppliers, which is in John Deereââ¬â¢s best interests. Some of its weakness are subjectivity, that it has no concern for what is good for supplier, and may have a difficult entry level since you only receive training if you rate highly in the system. Subjective metrics like the Wavelength and Technical criteria are more difficult to measure accurately. Subjective measures leave things open to interpretation. Personal bias or even misunderstanding can result in an artificially low or high rating in a subjective measurement. The criteria would need to be very clearly defined. The AEP program is also benefits John Deere primarily, rather than the suppliers. Suppliers that rate highly do get additional John Deere training, but even that is in the best interests of the John Deere Company. While John Deere is a reputable company, and desirable to do business with, the main reward for performance excellence in the AEP program is a plaque, maybe a banquet, and more John Deere training. The program almost has a negative incentive for new suppliers. John Deere should have some kind of outreach training for new suppliers that wish to be partners, rather than just supplying additional training for expert suppliers. It could be seen as a program that keeps the elite at elite levels, but does not offer assistance to those newcomers that may need the assistance and expertise of John Deere to improve. While responsiveness is encompassed in the wavelength measurement, I think that ità is important enough to have its own evaluation criteria (Winsor, Tan, Leong p. 124). The case mentions some of the frustrations that John Deere experienced waiting for the return of quotes from Complex Parts. An unresponsive supplier can cause supply chain issues very quickly. 2. Do you think Complex Parts has performed adequately over the past year? Why or why not? Which of the Deere supplier assessment classifications should be assigned to Complex Parts? I think that Complex Parts has adequate performance over the past year as a whole, however some areas of concern have arisen, specifically concerning delivery and communication. Their quality rating is very good, and until recently, their delivery rating was very good as well. Lately, an increasing number of deliveries had to be expedited, which costs John Deere money. The case stated that it seems as though expediting delivery has become a weekly requirement. Delivery ratings fell from 8,650 to 155,000 over the last quarter. That metric alone is enough to put the supplier in to Conditional status. Overall, I would assign a rating of Approved to Complex Parts. Their past performance is worth noting, but recent developments are of great concern. Reducing their supplier rating should send them a message that performance, specifically deliveries and responsiveness, must improve in order to continue doing business with John Deere. 3. If you were a member of the supplier evaluation team, what alternative course of action would you consider for Complex Parts? What recommendations should the team make to the project manager? As a member of the evaluation team, I would recommend that a very close eye be kept on the Delivery metric, as that is where the supplier seems to be slipping the most, and would communicate that intention to Complex Parts. They need to understand that while they have been a good supplier in the past, current performance issues cannot be ignored. Delivery times and response times to quotes and other communications must be improved. I would suggest a meeting between the project manager and key team members at Complex Parts to discuss expectations and possible consequences ofà non-compliance with John Deere policies. The team should recommend a rating of Approved to the project manager, with specific follow-up items detailed surrounding delivery and responsiveness. 4. What are the short-term and long-term implications of your recommendation? Short term, I would expect immediate improvements in the delivery rating of Complex parts. The reduction in rating is very much a disciplinary action, and intended to be an eye-opener to the supplier. It sends a message that while they are still valued as a supplier, certain aspects of their performance have slipped in to the unacceptable range. Long term, I believe that an action such as this should help strengthen the relationship. Disciplinary action usually comes off negatively, but if the right meetings and discussions take place and concerns are addressed openly and honestly, Complex Parts should be able to see that John Deere does have a vested interest in helping them improve and re-attain a raking of Partner. The fact that as a member of the evaluation team I am not just recommending dropping them or recommending a raking of Conditional shows that there is still hope in rebuilding the business relationship to a healthy, productive level. Case 7) Supplier Development at Deere, & Company 1. Is Deereââ¬â¢s tactic an appropriate one? I do not think Deereââ¬â¢s tactic is the appropriate way to approach the situation. I agree from the details of the case that some improvements need to be made the help reduce they cycle time at Excelsior, but I donââ¬â¢t think a mandatory cost reduction is going to get the job done. I think it will create bad blood and irreparably damage the supplier relationship. 2. What are the implications of the tactic and the possible consequences, positive or negative? The implications of the tactic are that Excelsior needs to fall in line with Deereââ¬â¢s demands or lose their business. The added implication is that Excelsior will essentially be out of business if this happens because 95% of their income is from Deereââ¬â¢s orders. Both of these outcomes are negative,à and I am having difficulty seeing a positive consequence come out of this situation. I think that Excelsior is justified in their concerns, and while they may be dragging their feet, I feel like it is an appropriate reaction to the concept of restructuring their entire process. 3. If it is not an appropriate tactic, what are some alternatives? I think that a valid alternative would be to emphasize the value that Excelsior has to Deere as a primary supplier of the connector that they manufacture for Deere, and to reinforce the desire to maintain a long-term, profitable relationship with them. Additionally, Deere may have been able to supply examples of other suppliers that they have worked with to improve their efficiency. Rather than case studies and meetings, real world examples of success could be used to help persuade Excelsiorââ¬â¢s top decision makers that this was the correct course of action. 4. Is this an ethical approach? I do not think that this is an ethical approach. Deere is effectively using their position of power in the relationship to force Excelsior to take action that they are not convinced is the correct course of action. I think that they should act in an advisory role, not force them in to action. Ultimately, the decision is Excelsiorââ¬â¢s as to whether to re-tool and comply with Deereââ¬â¢s wishes, and while there are big consequences to that decision, it should not be forced upon them. 5. What are some of the implications as far as human resource management is concerned? How can the group members better manage the consensus building to present an undivided front to Excelsior? If Deereââ¬â¢s plan does not succeed, there is a large risk that they will have to put forth a massive human resource effort to replace Excelsior as a supplier. Deere would have to expend large amounts of time and resources to identify, secure, and develop a new supplier. The group members could better manage consensus building by involving more people from Excelsiorââ¬â¢s production teams. Deere should work towards aà win-win scenario with Excelsior (p. 119). Perhaps they would be able to show the benefits of the proposed system to those that are closer to the actual work. Those individuals could then weigh in and lend support to the plan, possibly overcoming the resistance that Excelsiorââ¬â¢s Frank and Sanderson felt. Deereââ¬â¢s associates could re-commit to Excelsior that they are a valued long-term supplier, but that these changes needed to be enacted to ensure long-term viability. Deere could explain that there are customers further down the supply chain requesting faster turnaround, and that these requests are not solely coming from Deere. References Joel D. Wisner, K.-C. T. How Sexuality is Socially Constructed Essay - 2036 Words
From birth, ones sexuality is shaped by society. Cultures institute behaviors that are to be seen as the societal norms, which work to constantly reinforce societal expectations of how genders should act in relation to one another. Although some may argue that ones sexuality is an innate characteristic resulting from genetic makeup, there is a large amount of evidence pointing to its social construction instead. Through the power differences between males and females, established gender roles, and drastic economic shifts, society establishes sexuality and reinforces the behaviors that are expected of its citizens. As Tamsin Wilton explains in her piece, ââ¬Å"Which Oneââ¬â¢s the Man? The Heterosexualisation of Lesbian Sex,â⬠society has frontedâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Wilton later describes how, by turning away from the heterosexual male-female institution, women are taking a crucial step on the path of liberation. Although a woman may be content having relations with a male, the maleââ¬â¢s dominant role in society should be enough persuasion for the former to leave such structured relationship so as to explore a freer partnership that goes against societal expectations. Wilton refers to Monique Wittig, a French author and feminist theorist, who states ââ¬Å"our survival demands that we contribute all our strength to the destruction of the class of women within which men appropriate women.â⬠Thus, Wittig expresses that ââ¬Å"heterosexuality is a social systemâ⬠(Wilton 165). Why heterosexuality is forced upon the majority, however, is still unclear. Emily Martin, in her article, ââ¬Å"The Egg and the Sperm: How Science has Constructed a Romance Based on Stereotypical Male-Female Roles,â⬠explains why this is so. Procreation can only occur upon the union of sperm and egg and their behaviors have created stereotypes which ââ¬Å"imply not only that female biological processes are less worthy than their male counterparts but also that womenShow MoreRelatedSocial Constructionism : Sociology, History, And Philosophy940 Words à |à 4 PagesSexuality is the capacity of human beings to have sexually stimulating responses towards another human being. Personal Philosophy Of Leadership Styles - 1553 Words
The threads of my leadership style have been influenced by my personal work experience and my time in practicum. Throughout my experiences I have been exposed to many different types of personal and corporate styles of leadership that I have been able to evaluate and reflect on to judge their effectiveness and take away key concepts that I have applied to my own leadership style. Chief among these is understanding the concept that over reaching change and improvement is a team effort that requires being open to input from all different members of the health care team. My personal philosophy of leader ship is heavily influenced by my bird type which is a dove. Doves tend to be natural team players that like to collaborate and work as a team towards a goal. Leadership Styles The leadership styles that resonated the most with me were servant leadership and shared governance. I identify with the servant leadership style the most strongly because of the 12 principles that mirror my personal work ethic and values. I believe a good leader is one that is able to listen to others and work to motive and provide an environment that nurtures growth and continued learning. One example, of a time that I have demonstrated servant leadership was when I acted as a preceptor to a new nurse tech in the ED. Information System Audit in Indian Banks Free Essays
Information itself is an important asset in todayââ¬â¢s business. If information is lost, modified, misused huge loss can occur to business. Hence information security becomes important for any business. We will write a custom essay sample on Information System Audit in Indian Banks or any similar topic only for you Order Now Information system in business including that of banking is becoming technology oriented. Computers are being used in all the areas of business including that of financial accounting. Internal controls used in a Computerized Information System (CIS) environment should aim at information security also. This aspect of internal control is mostly overlooked in a Financial Audit where evidence collection and evaluation is more important. Audit provides the assurance to stakeholders of business. Assurance provided by a financial audit is about financial statements, which are relied upon and based on which decisions are taken by many stakeholders. However there are risks associated in any business, which is not highlighted in a financial audit. Operational Risk and Audit For example Basel II Accord mentions of ââ¬Ëoperational risksââ¬â¢ that are due to failure of system, process, procedure and human action/inaction (fraud) and legal restrictions, etc. in the operation of banks, some of which are not dealt in financial audit. The Basle committee has identified people, processes, systems and external events, as potential hazards for operations. Inadequacy and failure of any of them can result into events, which cause losses. Every business has to identify events of their relevance. The events may be similar in the same industry, but vary from an organization to organization. The whole exercise of the operational risk management is to identify potential events, which are likely to cause losses. Here is a list of some of the events, which could lead to operational risk (non exhaustive): Technology error Fraud and theftà Legal, Regulatory non compliance, Transaction risk Processes, people and systems are closely linked with information systems. Even measurement and recognition of external events need information systems. Therefore, under the new Accord, the job of an audit and control practitioner shall become more onerous and challenging. Therefore a financial audit cannot assure that the information system is foolproof as financial auditor is not expert in information technology. Hence an expert should provide an opinion that information system is risk-free. This is where Information System Audit (IS Audit) comes into picture. Meaning of IS audit Information systems audit is a part of the overall audit process, which is one of the facilitators for good corporate governance. While there is no single universal definition of IS audit, Ron Weber has defined it as ââ¬Å"the process of collecting and evaluating evidence to determine whether a computer system (information system) Safeguards assets Maintains data integrity Achieves organizational goals effectively and Consumes resources efficiently. â⬠Key Challenge in IS Audit IS audit often involves finding and recording observations that are highly technical. Such technical depth is required to perform effective IS audits. At the same time it is necessary to translate audit findings into vulnerabilities and businesses impacts to which operating managers and senior management can relate. Therein lies a main challenge of IS audit. Scope of IS Audit IS auditing is an integral part of the audit function because it ââ¬Å"supports the auditorââ¬â¢s judgment on the quality of the information processed by computer systems. â⬠Initially, auditors with IS audit skills are viewed as the technological resource for the audit staff. The audit staff often looks o them for technical assistance. Within IS auditing there are many types of audit needs, such as Organizational IS audits (management control over information technology), Technical IS audits (infrastructure, data centers, data communication), Application IS audit (business/financial/operational), Development/implementation IS audits (specification/ requirements, design, development and post-implementation phases) Compliance IS audits involving national or international standards. The IS auditorââ¬â¢s role has evolved to provide assurance that adequate and appropriate controls are place. Of course, the responsibility for ensuring that adequate internal controls are in place rests with management. Auditââ¬â¢s primary role, except in areas of management advisory services, is to provide a statement of assurance as to whether adequate and reliable internal controls are in place and are operating in an efficient and effective manner. So, whereas management is to ensure, auditors are to assure. The breadth and depth of knowledge required to audit information technology and systems is extensive. For example, IS auditing involves the: pplication of risk-oriented audit approaches use of computer assisted audit tools and techniques(CAATs) application of standards (national or international) such as ISO-9000/3 to improve and implement quality systems in software development understanding of business roles and expectations in the auditing of systems under development as well as the purchase of software packaging and project management Evaluation of complex Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) or new development techniques (e. g. , prototyping, end-user computing, rapid systems or application development). Evaluation of complex technologies and communications protocols involves electronic data interchange, client servers, local and wide area networks, data communications, telecommunications and integrated voice/data/video systems. Elements/components of IS Audit An information system is not just a computer. Todayââ¬â¢s information systems are complex and have many components that piece together to make a business solution. Assurances about an information system can be obtained only if all the components are evaluated and secured. The proverbial weakest link is the total strength of the chain. The major elements of IS audit can be broadly classified: Physical and environmental reviewââ¬âThis includes physical security, power supply, air conditioning, humidity control and other environmental factors. System administration reviewââ¬âThis includes security review of the operating systems, database management systems, all system administration procedures and compliance. Application software reviewââ¬âThe business application could be payroll, invoicing, a web-based customer order processing system or an enterprise resource planning system that actually runs the business. Review of such application software includes access control and authorizations, validations, error and exception handling, business process flows within the application software and complementary manual controls and procedures. Additionally, a review of the system development lifecycle should be completed. Network security reviewââ¬âReview of internal and external connections to the system, perimeter security, firewall review, router access control lists, port scanning and intrusion detection are some typical areas of coverage. Business continuity reviewââ¬âThis includes existence and maintenance of fault tolerant and redundant hardware, backup procedures and storage, and documented and tested disaster recovery/business continuity plan. Data integrity reviewââ¬âThe purpose of this is scrutiny of live data to verify adequacy of controls and impact of weaknesses, as noticed from any of the above reviews. Such substantive testing can be done using generalized audit software (e. g. , computer assisted audit techniques). It is important to understand that each audit may consist of these elements in varying measures; some audits may scrutinize only one of these elements or drop some of these elements. While the fact remains that it is necessary to do all of them, it is not mandatory to do all of them in one assignment. The skill sets required for each of these are different. The results of each audit need to be seen in relation to the other. This will enable the auditor and management to get the total view of the issues and problems. This overview is critical. Changing Things for the Better Essay Example For Students
Changing Things for the Better Essay Lets say my school receives a donation of money, which could be used in many ways to improve the school. Some examples would be: improving the cafeteria, buying computers, taking field trips, or etc, etc. Well if it were totally up to me on this situation, I would vote the money be spent on importing kids from other countries to this school. The reason for the matter is I dont like how many white kids there are in this school, heck, I dont like white kids in general. I mean, of course this is Nebraska, its pretty much a state of the hillbillies. There may be worse states, but I live in Nebraska, so thats not my problem. My problem is the white kids in this town, more precisely, the white kids in this generation. This generation totally blows. I havent seen a weaker generation of white kids in my life. I swear, the kids in the holocaust would kill to be in the position these white kids are in. There needs to be more colored people in this generation to teach these white kids what the real world is like, then maybe theyd get their poop in a group. I cant go into one of my classes without some white kid talking about how he and his friends got wasted à the other night at their white friends party. This isnt the movie Grown Ups, this is real life, this is drugs, alcohol, etc, etc. This generation blew over in the worst way possible. I cant say whether its the parents or the kids, but something needs to definitely change. Parents should teach their kids both the good things and bad things in life, so they know what road they want to go down, and the road they want to avoid. Well if it were the parents, good job, your kid smokes pot and drinks for a living. Thats why he or she is never home as much as they used to be. Now to the other point. Kids are disobeying their parents, sneaking out of the house at night, or not coming home until, lets say, 1-2 a. m. If they would teach more discipline to their kids, we wouldnt be having this problem. Discipline can either keep your kids safe, or the kid could still disobey the discipline and sneak out anyway. The harsher the punishment, the better accomplishment, just saying. Put your kids on lock down, keep an eye on them, lock them in a room(not recommended), do something to where you know it is a 100% fact they will not leave whatsoever. I know I may have gotten off topic, but I just really needed to throw all of this out there. Back to the main point. People of other ethnicities, races, or religions, are far different from white kids in this country. Its not just the kids, but grown up as well. The more stuff kids see, the more they want do it. Grownups are basically encouraging kids to have their lives. Asian kids are smart, I may not know the reason, but it looks pretty nice there, no violence, as we see here, in the U. S. Other countries arent as hectic as this hell hole we call our Land of the free, Home of the brave. à More like home of the d bags. We need kids from other countries teach our little poop squads a lesson or two. I dont like seeing this school turn in to some druggy school that parents dont want their kids going to, I want to see people actually enjoy it here.
